La Bete- Essential Season
By David Hirson Directed By Peter Anthony
“…[a] comic aggressor…[an] unstoppable, primitive force of chaos...” NY Times
High art meets low art when a pompous, bombastic, flatulent street performer challenges a renowned acting troupe. And something has got to give. Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.
Lincoln Center Magnolia Theatre- 417 W Magnolia St
France, 1654. Elomire, the renowned leader of a famous acting company, is furious that the troupe’s patroness, Princess Conti, is forcing a low-life street performer, Valere, onto their troupe. Elomire finds Valere and his work both revolting and common. In a hilarious attempt to make Princess Conti see what a buffoon Valere truly is, Elomire challenges him to an impromptu performance of one of his plays. Elomire is in for a surprise - and a personal and professional challenge - as Valere proceeds to create theatrical chaos.
Winner of an Olivier Award for best new comedy of the year.
Replete with an opulent set and stunning period costumes and wigs, La Bête is sure to start the season off with a BANG! . La Bête is aptly named as it is translated to mean fool or beast and the main character, Valere, is exactly that. He is certain to leave a lasting impression on audiences. Critics have called Valere bombastic, audacious, boorish, flatulent, pompous, obnoxious, annoying and . . . supremely entertaining! The linguistic agility of the performers is only outdone by their physical hilarity in this play inspired by Moliere. La Bête will keep audiences of all ages laughing.
"LA BÊTE…begins with a bang that can make even a jaded New York audience abruptly spring to attention. No, one won't soon forget…LA BÊTE, which takes the brave chances so rare in new American plays." — NY Times
“. . . a riveting comic display . . .”-- The Guardian
